At last the moment comes, and Roz escapes from Hilltop Farm. But getting away is only the beginning. Between her and the island lies a vast, unknown landscape — rugged hills, deep forests, rushing rivers — and Roz has no map. With Brightbill flying above to guide her, she must navigate her way step by step toward the distant sea.
The journey is hard, and it is dangerous. Roz is now a fugitive. The company that owns her does not let its property simply walk away. They send the RECOs — recovery robots built to track her down — and these machines follow relentlessly, never tiring, never resting, never giving up the chase. Roz is hunted and pursued across the wilderness. She hides in thickets, slips down into ravines, and pushes through tangled underbrush, doing everything she can to keep from being found.
It is an exhausting trek. Even a robot's strength has limits, and the long voyage drains Roz's power day by day. But she does not turn back. Driven by the memory of the island and the son flying above her, Roz presses on, almost unstoppable. Every mile is a mile closer to home — and Roz has decided that no distance, and no danger, will keep her from it.
