—:—
At the end of Roz's first adventure, she was badly damaged and carried away from the island she had come to call home. The Wild Robot Escapes begins where that story left off — not in the wild, but in a repair facility, where Roz lies in pieces on a workbench. A team of workers sets about fixing her. They run diagnostic checks to find every fault, partly dismantle her to reach the broken parts, and replace each damaged component one by one. To them, Roz is simply a machine to be repaired and put back to use — an older model, almost out of date, but still worth saving. They do not know, and would not believe, that this robot remembers. Because Roz does remember. Hidden deep in her circuitry, untouched by the repairs, are her memories of the island: the animals who became her neighbours, the geese she once led, and above all Brightbill, the gosling she raised as her own son. As the workers calibrate her systems and finally switch her back on, Roz returns to life carrying a secret longing. She is repaired, reactivated, and ready to be sent out to work once more — but a part of her is already thinking of home.
